A practical guide for the diagnosis of abdominal angiostrongyliasis ... - Parasites & Vectors

Image
Diagnosis of AA is generally confirmed by the identification of A. costaricensis eggs, larvae or adult worms during histopathological analysis of the vermiform appendix and small and large bowel [19], although rare cases of testicular and liver disease have also been reported [20,21,22]. It is also possible to confirm the diagnosis in suspected cases by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using DNA from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues (FFPE) [23]. Nucleic acid detection in serum has also been standardized for AA using primers targeting A. cantonensis sequences [24, 25]. Studies are underway to design additional assays using A. costaricensis sequences. Histopathology: macroscopic and microscopic findings Macroscopically, an appendix infected with A. costaricensis is similar in appearance to that seen in routine cases of acute appendicitis, with red or black fibrinopurulent deposits in the serosa and a thickened wall (Fig. 2a, b) [13]. To increase the chances of finding...

Parasitic worms found swarming underneath Vietnamese woman’s skin after she ate raw blood pudding - The Indian Express

Image
A Vietnamese woman from An Binh commune in the suburbs of Hanoi was found to be infected with parasitic worms after eating a raw blood pudding . The 58-year-old survived the parasitic attack, which reached even her brain, after being taken to the hospital. Reportedly, the woman had eaten the traditional Vietnamese delicacy, 'Tiet canh', which is typically made up of raw blood of ducks, geese, or pigs, and cooked meat. After eating the dish, she suffered from severe headaches and fell over multiple times in her home. According to mirror.co.uk , she was taken to the Dang Van Ngu Hospital where it was found that parasitic worms were swarming under her skin in her arms and legs, with some worms also nesting in her brain. Deputy director of the hospital, Dr Tran Huy Tho, was quoted by local media as saying that the medical staff had initially thought that the symptoms were caused by a stroke. However, after undergoing a scan, it was discovered that she was suffering from an inf...

Bird shots: Is vaccinating poultry the best defense against a deadly ... - Science

Image
Lakeside, California— Hilliker's Ranch Fresh Eggs in this San Diego suburb has 30,000 chickens in three "cage-free," open-air barns, where birds crowd the floor like rush-hour riders on a big city subway. "A cage-free aviary is a very interesting science experiment," says Frank Hilliker, who runs the farm his grandfather started in 1942. He worries mightily about infections spreading through the massed birds. On his iPhone, he pulls up a list of the vaccines his chickens get: against Newcastle disease, infectious laryngotracheitis, coryza, colibacillosis, salmonella, infectious bronchitis, and fowlpox. There is one disease for which his chickens have not been vaccinated: a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that's now racing around the world, killing 90% or more of the poultry it infects. Endemic in migratory birds, this HPAI emerged in U.S. poultry in February 2022, and to date has killed or required the culling of a record 58 million chickens, turk...

NewBorn Screening (NBS) Test: Significance, Procedure, Price & ... - Metropolis Healthcare

Image
The birth of a newborn child is a cause for celebration among families worldwide. However, there is also a cause for concern initially, as the infant is vulnerable, and their health markers need to be appropriately checked before taking them home. Hospitals are particularly aware of this and strive to ensure the newborn's health. One of the primary ways to do this is with the help of a Newborn Screening Test, or NBS Test for short. This blog will address its definition, importance, procedure, and results. What is NewBorn Screening (NBS) Blood Test? An NBS test is a blood test done on newborn babies to check for certain conditions that can be treated if found early. The blood test is usually done within the first few days after birth. Martinsville and Henry County one of 15 communities nationwide ... - Cardinal News

Image
Martinsville and the surrounding Henry County area could be primed to lead Virginia toward a more equitable healthcare system.  This is according to officials from Virginia's Department of Health who recently announced Martinsville as one of 15 nationwide locations recognized for local efforts to emphasize race and equity in local healthcare and community wellness.   At the helm of the local effort is a collaborative of almost three dozen concerned residents.   "Here in Martinsville we had no community organization," said Greg Peitz. Peitz is part of the Martinsville Henry County Equity Collaborative, a 30-member group of people who have self-tasked themselves with identifying ways Martinsville and surrounding areas can better represent its minority population.  Martinsville's Black population is 47%, according to recent numbers from the Census Bureau.  While the group was founded i...

What to know about pink eye, covid and allergies - The Washington Post

Image
Pinkeye — an inflamed, itchy and painful eye — is common during allergy season. But now some doctors are concerned the ailment may also be associated with a new coronavirus subvariant. Health experts say they have not conclusively linked the condition, formally called conjunctivitis, to the subvariant Arcturus. But anecdotal reports suggest the subvariant may produce fever and conjunctivitis, mainly among children. "It's occurring in the setting where they've documented community spread of this virus," said William Schaffner, a professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Pinkeye can be caused by allergies, injury, bacterial infections or viral infections (not just covid), and can occur in both children and adults. We spoke with experts about what to do if you have this symptom and when to see a doctor. What to know Adblock test (Why?)

Britain's terrifying isolation tent for the world's deadliest diseases - The Telegraph

Image
On the 11th floor of the Royal Free Hospital in London, a stone's throw from the genteel hubbub of Hampstead Heath, a single bed stands shrouded and empty in an unlit room. It's an unsettling sight. The bed is forensically sealed inside a large plastic tent and rests solus in the centre of the room. From its frame, high-tech tubes and wires hang coiled. And in the walls of the transparent structure are five corporeal gloves, each large enough to envelope the arms and head of a nurse or doctor. It's here, in one of only two high-level isolation facilities in the UK, that patients sickened with the world's most dangerous infectious diseases are brought for treatment. Whether it be Ebola or Marburg, Lassa or even Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, care can be provided while the patient and pathogen remain entirely contained to prevent a wider outbreak. The UK can go years without reporting any such infections, offi...
