Infected Eczema: Pictures, Symptoms and Treatment - Health Central

Image
On its own, eczema is an uncomfortable condition that leaves skin dry, itchy, cracked, and flaky. Infected eczema, however, is an entirely different ballgame. In fact, if infected eczema is left untreated, it can not only be incredibly painful and uncomfortable, but also downright dangerous. To understand infected eczema—including what causes it, symptoms to be aware of, treatment options, and more—we tapped three board-certified dermatologists for their expert insight on the matter. Here, learn everything you need to know about infected eczema and how to protect yourself from it. What Is Infected Eczema? Infected eczema is exactly what it sounds like: eczema plagued by infection. According to Marisa Garshick, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Cornell-New York Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, infected eczema can develop due to the presence of bacteria, fungi, or a virus that invades the skin. "When an infection occurs related to a bacterium, it

Radical Trial Shows Hookworms May Protect People From Type 2 ... - ScienceAlert

Image
Getting infected with a hookworm doesn't sound like something you should do on purpose, but if patients can stomach the idea, their health could very well benefit. In the first clinical trial of its kind, a team led by scientists from James Cook University in Australia inoculated volunteers with human hookworm larvae ( Necator americanus ) to see if these parasites can improve their metabolic health. The two-year study included 24 participants, each of whom showed heightened insulin resistance at the start of the trial. By the end of the investigation, researchers found those who were infected with hookworms showed a significant reduction in their insulin resistance scores compared to those who were given a placebo. That's not enough to recommend the practice just yet, but the findings join those of another pioneering study published in 2021 that infected participants with hookworms and found it benefited their gut's microbiome. The researchers say

Rare Glanzmann Thrombasthenia Critical for the Understanding of ... - ASH Publications

Fast Facts: Glanzmann thrombasthenia Swiss pediatrician Eduard Glanzmann published the original clinical description of Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) in 1918. 1 In 1973, GT went on to play a pivotal role in hematology when it was proposed that the clinical presentation of GT resulted from missing glycoproteins (GP) on platelets. Alan T. Nurden, PhD, emeritus research director of Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris, and Jacques Caen, MD, emeritus professor at the Académie Nationale de Médecine in Paris, made this discovery by applying electrophoretic procedures to the platelets of patients with GT. Their work stimulated worldwide investigations that shed light on the complexity of the platelet surface constituents and revealed that, once activated, the GP IIb/IIIa complex (now known as the αIIbβ3 integrin) becomes the receptor for fibrinogen. As such, it forms the basic link between platelets and the fibrin network that forms around a clot. The platelets

In 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that the global prevalence of anemia in children aged 6 to 59 months was 39.8%, equivalent to 269 million children, with the highest prevalence rate (60.2%) observed in children leaving in the African region. 1 Published epidemiologic data suggest that the prevalence of anemia in the United States (US) is approximately 5.6%. 2 Untreated, childhood anemia has the potential to cause chronic and irreversible cognitive impairment resulting in poor school performance and decreased work capacity in adulthood, impacting the community at large. 3 Anemia is defined as a reduced blood hemoglobin level or red blood cell (RBC) mass that is unable to meet the oxygen demands of peripheral tissues and organs. The laboratory threshold for defining anemia is a hem
