Toxoplasma gondii infection | IJWH - Dove Medical Press

Image
Introduction Toxoplasmosis is a protozoan parasitic disease caused by infection with the intracellular obligate coccidian parasite Toxoplasma gondii . It is affecting one-third of the human population around the globe. 1–3 Human Toxoplasmosis causes mild, non-specific clinical features, it is an important opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised persons and pregnant women, causing severe clinical manifestations and congenital defects. 4,5 The prevalence rate of the infection differs among different geographical regions, and most of the world's adult population documented to have contact with the parasite. 6,7 Interaction and contact between domestic animals and humans may lead to an increased risk of transmission. It has been concluded that in cats where sexual development or multiplication occurs, leads to the dissemination or distribution of many oocysts into the environment, where they can transmit or infect all kinds of warm-blooded animals involving humans. 8 Most ca...

Those 12% – most likely to be men or people between the ages of 50 and 65 – eat what researchers called a disproportionate amount of beef on a given day, based on the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Photo by iStock. A new study has found that 12% of Americans are responsible for eating half of all beef consumed on a given day, a finding that may help consumer groups and government agencies craft educational messaging around the negative health and environmental impacts of beef consumption. Those 12% – most likely to be men or people between the ages of 50 and 65 – eat what researchers called a disproportionate amount of beef on a given day, a distinction based on the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which suggest 4 ounces per day of meat, poultry, and eggs  combined  for those consuming 2200 calories per day.  The study, published in the journal  Nutrients , analyzed data from the ...

‘Genetic, acquired factors can cause abnormal blood clotting’ - The New Indian Express

Image
Express News Service Blood clotting disorders are conditions that cause blood to form clots too easily, potentially restricting the normal flow of blood within your body.  Dr Deepak Charles, a consultant haematologist-oncologist, explains clotting disorders, prevention, and treatment methods. Why does abnormal clotting occur? There are two types of clotting disorders commonly encountered. The most frequently observed is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which occurs in the lower limbs. In this type, blood clots develop in one of the body's deep veins. The second type is pulmonary embolism, wherein a blood clot blocks an artery in the lung, halting blood flow. Both genetic and acquired factors contribute to abnormal blood clotting. Genetic factors encompass gene mutations and variations in protein levels. Acquired factors involve the presence of other diseases and the side effects of drugs and medications. Additionally, certain blood-related cancers can trigg...

The race to save a bird from the Maui wildfires — and extinction - The Washington Post

Image
MAKAWAO, Hawaii — Inside a barn, atop a dormant volcano on Maui, a pair of birds is building a nest. It's their kind's last chance to survive in our rapidly warming world. This is the 'akikiki. This little, silver bird holds the unenviable title of being the most endangered bird in the United States. A grim census earlier this year found only five left in the wild on the neighboring island of Kauai, its native home. So here at the Maui Bird Conservation Center, their human caretakers have brought the pair of potential lovebirds everything they need to weave a nest and save their kind: fern hair, forest moss, cocoa fibers, even spiderwebs. Plants sprouting from high shelves simulate the rainforest canopy. An overhead water system mists to mimic the wet weather of Kauai's forests. "It's the last effort to save the species," said Jennifer Pribble, who oversees operations at the bird sanctuary. But this landlocked Noah's ark was almost struck by the wildf...

Parasite prevention in today's world - dvm360.com

Image
GarkushaArt / stock.adobe.com The spread of parasites around the globe has largely been linked to migratory activities. 1 Heather D.S. Walden, PhD, MS, an associate professor of parasitology at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville, told dvm360 , "People and pets are moving around more, whether traveling on a vacation or moving permanently. People [may] live in one climate during part of the year and another for the remainder of that year." She added that the transport of animals and goods from country to country can also facilitate the movement of parasites, so there are more invasive host species along with their parasites. With parasites frequently being introduced to new areas, parasite preventives are important for keeping pets and their families safe from zoonotic infections. These infections can range from posing no clinical signs and a limited health risk to causing potential gastrointestinal upset to provoking neurological symptoms ...
