The person is presumed to have contracted malaria from a local mosquito bite. Malaria cases are rare in the U.S., and most are related to overseas travel. Weather plays a big role in malaria. A rare case of a person being infected with malaria from a local mosquito bite is being reported in Florida. State health department offices in neighboring Sarasota and Manatee counties, on Florida's West Coast just south of Tampa Bay, issued an advisory on Monday alerting residents to the infection. A news release said the counties were "responding to one confirmed case of malaria among an individual who spent extensive time outdoors." Christopher Tittel, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Health in Manatee, added more details in an email to weather.com Wednesday. "It's presumed that the individual was bitten by an area mosquito infected with the disease," Tittel said. (MORE: 7 Things Florida Newcomers Should Know About Hurricane Season ) About 2,000 case

Newly discovered chemical is a highly targeted killer of parasitic ... - Science

The most abundant animals on farms—and everywhere on land, in fact—are microscopic worms called nematodes. Some kinds benefit the soil, but others parasitize crops, inflicting more than $100 billion in losses worldwide each year. Although pesticides can get rid of harmful nematodes, they inflict collateral damage on other life. Now, researchers have discovered a new chemical that selectively kills harmful nematodes with a much lower risk of toxicity to humans and other creatures. "This is really unique," says parasitologist Tim Geary of McGill University and Queen's University Belfast, who was not involved. "It could offer a way to improve control of crop pests." Farmers try to prevent nematode damage in various ways. Rotating crops, sterilizing soil with plastic sheets, and planting nematode-resistant crop varieties can all help control the problem, but the most effective solution is treating fields with pesticides. Yet most of the widely used chemicals kno

How to plant a container like the pros do - Greenwich Time

Image
Have you ever gone to the grocery store for, say, milk, and left with a cartful of impulse buys? Well, I visited a couple of nurseries last week in search of one specific plant and left with nearly everything except that plant, which both retailers had sold out. As usual, I was seduced by the colorful, pre-planted annual containers on display, and hemmed and hawed about whether I should buy them or make my own. I often do the latter, but sometimes can't resist the allure of all that beautifully arranged eye candy. Those thoughtfully planted pots and baskets are often created by talented garden center workers, sometimes following recipes provided by the plants' wholesale nursery growers. They're a great option if you're looking for instant gratification, which, if I'm being honest, I often am. However, creating your own mixed container is an easy, fun and often money-sav

Introduction Malaria is named after the Italian term "mal'aria", which means "bad air" to represent the association of the disease with marshy areas. 1 It is an endemic vector-borne parasitic disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. 2 Plasmodium consists of over 200 species, infecting mammals, birds, and reptiles, and malaria parasites generally tend to be host-specific. 3 Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale , and Plasmodium knowlesi are the five known species of the genus Plasmodium that causes malaria in humans. 4,5 Of the five Plasmodium species that cause malaria in humans, P. falciparum causes severe malaria. 6 The life cycle of the parasites is a complex process occurring in both vertebrate hosts and a mosquito vector. Besides, it undergoes both sexual and asexual reproduction mechanisms. This makes the development of drugs and vac

Private Healthcare on Rise as Britain's Public Healthcare System ... - DARKDaily.com - Laboratory News

Image
Challenges abound as the NHS tries to recover before UK citizens move to private insurance; some patients have wait times of up to six months for a histopathology diagnosis of cancer Britain's National Health Service (NHS) is in dire straits. The UK's vaunted state-run healthcare system is overrun with appallingly poor conditions, impossibly long wait times, diminished care, and multiple walk-outs in various medical fields that Dark Daily reported on last week in "British Junior Doctors Stage Four-Day Walkout Demanding Increased Pay and Better Working Conditions." As we noted, thousands of clinical laboratory tests and surgical pathology readings had to be delayed or cancelled due to the strikes. An NHS worker in a Liverpool hospital told CNN that conditions felt like a "war zone" with patients being treated in the backs of ambulances, corridors, waiting rooms, cupboards, or not at all since hospitals are well over capacity.
