Fever in children: Diagnosis, symptoms, causes, treatment - Insider

Image
Fever in children is common and is usually not an emergency. However, if your child has a temperature over 100.4 °F for three consecutive days, you should consider consulting a medical professiional. You should also seek medical aid if your child has a fever and is experiencing symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and if the fever lasts for more than three consecutive days. Fever in children accounts for the majority of pediatrician and family physician consultations. It is most commonly caused by infections since body temperature increases when the immune system fights off bacteria and viruses. A child's temperature that exceeds 100.4 °F is considered a fever.  "For most children, having a fever is not an emergency and it's not dangerous for a child to have a high temperature,"

Posh areas in city also have filariasis patients - Times of India

Image
Nagpur: While filariasis or elephantiasis is turning endemic in most parts of the country, six tehsils in Nagpur district and five zones in Nagpur city (NMC area) are still having over 1% test positivity rate for this disease. Due to this, Laxmi Nagar, Dhantoli, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, and Nehru Nagar zones in the city will be covered under the triple-drug therapy to control filariasis from May 25. More than 14 lakh residents of these five zones will be distributed three medicines — Di-ethylcarbamazine Citrate, Albendazole, and Ivermectin tablets. Health workers on duty will request the people to have these tablets in front of them. Health department has appealed to the people to cooperate and have the medicines as these are completely safe and the only way to protect oneself from elephantiasis. Apart from the five zones in the city, Nagpur (rural), Hingna, Kuhi, Kamptee, Umred, and Bhivapur are also selected for the triple-drug drive. "We have been working with an aim to elimi

Review: 'HyperParasite' Is The Best Indie Game You've Probably Never Heard Of - Forbes

Image
This year's gaming headliners have consistently delivered; we're not even four months into 2020 and DOOM Eternal , Resident Evil 3 , and Ori and the Will of the Wisps have set a ridiculously high bar already. But for all these huge releases, HyperParasite is the most addictive game of the year so far. Nothing even comes close. Following a spell of Early Access success on Steam, HyperParasite quietly landed on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch earlier this month. Despite little fanfare, this plucky little rogue-lite–and trust me, I usually hate rogue-lites–combines twin-stick shooter gameplay, excellent progression mechanics and a simple, Blood Dragon -meets- Drive 80s aesthetic to create an incredibly deep and rich experience. HyperParasite isn't fair, easy, particularly attractive or, as is often the case, fun. You'll regularly die within a couple of minutes of starting your run. You'll see your best-laid plans go to waste, as you watch

National Public Health Emergency to Last Until At Least October - Route Fifty

Image
State Medicaid administrators will have at least until the fall before having to begin the mammoth task of reassessing whether every resident who receives the low-income health care coverage can continue to get help. In addition, millions of people who are receiving additional food stamp benefits will get the extra assistance until at least October, after a deadline passed this week for U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to tell states that he is ending the nation's Covid-19 public health emergency. "As HHS committed to earlier, we will provide a 60-day notice to states before any possible termination or expiration," an HHS spokesman said on Friday. The end of the emergency will have major ramifications for Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.  The Families First Coronavirus Response Act, passed by Congress in March 2020, gave states greater flexibility to let more people receive food stamp benefits. It also increased t

Spirometra tapeworm found in UK man's head after 4 years - Outbreak News Today - Outbreak News Today

A very rare parasite was discovered residing in the brain of a man from the United Kingdom by researchers at CUH Addenbrooke, the 1 cm long tapeworm lived there for at least four years. The tapeworm, identified as Spirometra erinaceieuropaei, traveled 5cm from the right side of the brain to the left during that period. See images HERE Image/CIA "The clinical histology slide offered us a great opportunity to generate the first genome sequence of this elusive class of tapeworms," says Dr Hayley Bennett, first author of the study from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "However, we only had a minute amount of DNA available to work with – just 40 billionths of a gram. So we had to make difficult decisions as to what we wanted to find out from the DNA we had. "To identify the exact species of worm, the researchers sequenced one particular gene, the so-called "barcode of life". Fortunately for

Parasites in Poop Near Stonehenge Reveal Secrets of Prehistoric Diets - CNET

Image
If you were a builder of Stonehenge living in the nearby Durrington Walls settlement back around 2500 BC, your dinner might have consisted of cow organs and your dog might have helped you polish off the leftovers. An analysis of ancient feces dating back 4,500 years is providing some fascinating insights into the diets of the people who likely built the iconic Stonehenge monument. The fancier name for the preserved poop is "coprolite." A team led by researchers at the University of Cambridge investigated 19 pieces of coprolite excavated from a dung heap and discovered eggs from parasitic worms in one sample of human feces and four of dog feces. Human coprolite from Durrington Walls near Stonehendge. Lisa-Marie Shillito Previous research suggests Durrington Walls was occupied seasonally and hosted winter feasts. "This is the first time intestinal parasites have bee

Control of zoonotic malaria may be hindered by missing knowledge of its mosquitoes - BugBitten - BMC Blogs Network

The pig-tailed macaque is a natural host of simian malaria Photo credit: shankar s. | flickr In 2017, the World Health Organization South-East Asia Region committed to the elimination of malaria by 2030. In this important effort, they have been largely successful in controlling human malaria caused by species like Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax . Zoonotic malaria on the other hand, is harder to control and impossible to completely eliminate – here, sylvatic animals play unwilling hosts for these parasites, and transmission to humans rises as we continue to enter wildlife habitats. Additionally, cases can go undetected because communities in high-risk areas can be difficult to reach, diagnose, and treat. Malaysia, for example, has been free of human malaria transmission since 2018 (although imported cases continue to be a risk). However, there has been a rise in zoonotic malaria caused by Plasmodium knowlesi , found in non-human primates like the long-tailed macaque; approximatel

Etranacogene Dezaparvovec, a Gene Therapy for Hemophilia B, Gets Priority Review - MPR

Image
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted for Priority Review the Biologics License Application (BLA) for etranacogene dezaparvovec, for the treatment of adults with hemophilia B. Etranacogene dezaparvovec is an investigational gene therapy that uses a recombinant adeno-associated viral vector of serotype 5 (AAV5) to carry the Padua gene variant of factor IX. The single dose treatment generates factor IX proteins that are 5 to 8 times more active than normal. The BLA is supported by data from the HOPE-B trial (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03569891), a phase 3, open-label, single arm study that included 54 male participants with severe or moderately severe hemophilia B. Patients were initially enrolled in a 6-month observational period during which they continued to receive current standard of care. After the lead-in period, patients received a single intravenous dose of etranacogene dezaparvovec. The primary endpoint was 52-week annualized

Coagulation disorders: Causes, symptoms, and treatments - Medical News Today

Image
Coagulation disorders refer to conditions that affect how the body controls blood clotting. If a person's blood does not clot, or coagulate, normally, they may experience complications from bleeding too much after injury or surgery or having blockages that prevent blood flow. Coagulation disorders cause the body to form too many or too few blood clots. They are usually due to a genetic mutation and are often treatable with medications. Coagulation disorders can cause excessive bleeding if the body is unable to form blood clots properly. In other cases, they may cause the body to produce blood clots too readily and increase the risk of blocked blood vessels. This article will discuss the different types, causes, and treatments of coagulation disorders. Coagulation disorders are when the body has issues controlling blood clots. Coagulation refers to the process of forming blood clots — our bodies rely on this vital process to help prevent excessive bleeding from an injured blood vess
