Tonsillitis and strep throat are common contagious illnesses of the throat that share symptoms. Although they can sometimes be caused by the same bacteria, they're technically different infections. Tonsillitis occurs when a virus or bacterium causes an infection in the tonsils (the soft tissue lumps at the back of the throat). Strep throat occurs when a certain type of bacteria known as Streptococcus causes an infection in the throat area, which can also include the tonsils. While both illnesses cause a sore throat and other overlapping symptoms, treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the infection. Euthanized elk diagnosed with disease rarely documented in wild animals - Town and Country TODAY

Image
CANMORE, Alta – Provincial Fish and Wildlife officers have been forced to euthanize a sick and debilitated adult female elk later diagnosed with a bacterial disease rarely found in elk. The elk carcass was taken to a lab in Calgary where testing confirmed its untimely death was due to a clostridial disease, which has also been documented in a handful of elk in neighbouring Banff National Park. "I can't say it hasn't been identified before (outside the park), but this is the first time in 22 years I've ever interacted with it," said Mark Hoskin, a district Fish and Wildlife officer. A handful of suspicious deaths in Banff's elk herd, which carries the liver fluke parasite, were discovered in the national park over the past two years, including one carcass found near the Banff recreation grounds in January. Necropsies, which are surgical examinations of dead animals, and Parks Canada's wildlife veterinarian working with a pathologist, were ab...

Where Can I Find a Monkeypox Vaccine Near Me? - KQED

Image
If I'm eligible, where can I find a monkeypox vaccine? Supplies of the monkeypox vaccine in the Bay Area are distributed directly from the California Dept. of Public Health, who get their supply from the federal government. And right now, availability is still limited and demand is high. If you're experiencing the symptoms of monkeypox, or you've been informed you could have been exposed to monkeypox, you should contact a health care provider right away. A health care provider can (hopefully) help you navigate this process, talk about any additional risk factors you might have and also tell you whether you're eligible for some of the monkeypox treatments currently available. If you have health insurance, reach out to your provider as soon as you can. Kaiser Permanente has received monkeypox vaccines and is currently offering them only to Kaiser members. You can make an appointment by calling the health provider's direct monkeypox vaccination line at...

Eye parasites: Types, treatment, and prevention - Medical News Today

Some parasites can infect humans. Once inside of a body, parasites can travel to different organs, including the eyes. Without treatment, these infections can lead to eye pain, vision problems, and in some cases, blindness. Parasites are organisms that live in, or on, another organism. The host organism provides the parasites with ideal living conditions and a source of nutrients. Most parasites damage their hosts in some way. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies three types of parasites that cause diseases in humans. These are: protozoa, or single-celled organisms, which can multiply inside of the body, which can lead to serious infections helminths, which include flatworms, flukes, and roundworms ectoparasites, or blood-sucking invertebrates, include mosquitoes, lice, ticks, and mites Most parasites secrete toxic substances, damaging their hosts. These substances can destroy the tissue or cause inflammation. This article looks at some parasitic infections ...

Image
Von Willebrand disease is a blood-clotting disorder that usually develops as an inherited, genetic mutation. People with this mutation lack a specific protein called the von Willebrand factor, which helps your platelets form blood clots. In rare cases, though, you could develop this condition without inheriting it. Known as acquired von Willebrand disease, this particular type of the disorder can be caused by medications or other medical conditions — including autoimmune disorders. It isn't an autoimmune disorder exactly but acquired von Willebrand disease usually occurs alongside these types of conditions. In this article, you'll learn more about acquired von Willebrand disease, how it's linked to autoimmune disease, and what conditions could put you at risk of developing this bleeding disorder. Von Willebrand disease can be considered an autoimmune disorder in rare cases, but acquired versions of this disease usually develop as a result of other autoimmune conditions, dis...
